Description

The EOSCTA service is CERN physics data archival storage infrastructure for Run 3. It entered production at CERN during summer 2020 and has been serving all the LHC and non-LHC data tape workflows. It is a complete redesign of the tape software, tape cache and tape workflows designed for Run 3 rates that introduces scalability changes targeting Run4. It already set a new record of monthly archival volume for CERN tape and reached write efficiency demonstrated during earlier data challenges.
In this contribution, we review how the EOSCTA operations team has deployed and has been operating this critical storage infrastructure while continuously refining its best practices to serve its user communities. Feedback and expertise have been regularly delivered to all experiment data management teams to optimize data workflows and data management procedures in order to optimize tape resource usage for EOSCTA specific tape buffer architecture.
In addition we discuss the current EOSCTA limitations and upcoming challenges as tape data storage is getting warmer in the workflows of all experiments and how we are planning to solve them together with the wider HEP tape community.
