Description

Experiment E12-14-001, “The EMC Effect in Spin Structure Functions”, will be performed in Hall B at Jefferson Lab and compare the polarized quark distribution functions of bound and free protons using inclusive and quasi-elastic scattering scattering of electrons from dynamically polarized samples of solid ammonia (NH$_3$) and solid lithium deuteride ($^7$LiD). According to shell model calculations, about 87$\%$ of the $^7$Li spin is carried by a single valence proton, making it an effective source of polarized, bound protons. In this talk I will describe our plans to fabricate target samples from commercially available LiD powder, irradiate them at the CEBAF injector, and test their polarization at 5 T and 1 K in the JLab Target Development Laboratory.
