Description

The spectroscopy of $S=-2$ nuclei is a unique project of the \panda Collaboration at FAIR. Both planned measurements will complement ongoing activities at J-PARC. The first measurement will for the first time explore the excitation spectrum of $\Lambda\Lambda$ hypernuclei, while the second will measure X-ray cascades from heavy $\Xi^-$-atoms. The main components of the setup are - a primary target stage employing a thin carbon fibre - an active secondary target system to stop $\Xi$-baryons and to track pions from weak hypernulcear decays - a germanium detector arry based on 20 triple cluster detectors This contribution will present the current design of the main detector components and the status of the prototype development. We will also report various tests performed with the planned detector components and the expected performance of the setup.
